You received a PDF form and need to send it back. If you are wondering how to fill out a PDF form without installing anything, start with the browser already on your computer.
If the document has fillable fields, you can use Chrome, Edge, Brave, or another Chromium browser. Click the fields, type your answers, and download the completed file. Your PDF stays on your computer during this process.

How to fill out a PDF form in Chrome, Edge, or Brave
We tested this method in Chromium with this sample fillable PDF. The same basic controls work in Chrome and other Chromium browsers.

Download the PDF
Save the attachment or linked PDF to your computer. Keep the original blank file so you can start again if you make a mistake.

Open the PDF in your browser
Drag the PDF into an open browser tab. You can also right-click the file, choose Open with, and select Chrome, Edge, or Brave.

Click each field and enter your answer
Click inside the first text field and type. Press Tab to move to the next field. Click checkboxes, radio buttons, and dropdowns to make your selections.

Review the form
Scroll through every page. Check names, dates, selected boxes, and any required fields before you save the file.

Download a completed copy
In Chrome, select Download, then choose With your changes. Edge and Brave may use a different label. Give the file a clear new name, such as application-completed.pdf, so you do not overwrite the blank original.
Open the downloaded copy once more. This check matters because some PDF viewers display entries correctly but fail to keep them in the saved file.
What if you cannot type in the PDF?
A PDF can look like a form without being a fillable form.
An interactive PDF contains real text fields, checkboxes, radio buttons, or dropdowns. Your browser can select these fields.
A flat PDF is one fixed page. It may be a scan, an image, or a document that was exported without form fields. Clicking a blank line does nothing because there is no field behind it.
Try these fixes:
- Open the file in another PDF viewer. Some fields do not work in every app.
- Use Preview, Adobe Acrobat Reader, or WPS Office to place a text box over the blank area.
- Ask the sender for a fillable copy if the form should contain fields.
- If you own the document, add interactive fields to the PDF before sending it again.
Do not convert the form to Word unless you have no better option. Conversion can move text, break tables, remove form fields, and change the page layout.
Best alternatives when the browser is not enough
Preview on Mac
Preview is the best next choice for most Mac users because it is already installed. Open the PDF and click a field to type. If the PDF is flat, use the form-filling toolbar to add a text box.
Preview also makes signatures easy. You can create one with your trackpad, Mac camera, iPhone, or iPad, then place and resize it on the page. Apple provides the full steps in its Preview guide for filling and signing PDFs.
Adobe Acrobat Reader
Adobe Acrobat Reader is a good desktop choice when the browser does not handle the form correctly. It supports interactive fields and has Fill & Sign tools for flat forms.
Open the file, select a field, and type. For a flat form, open Fill & Sign and add text or marks where needed. Adobe also supports typed, drawn, and image signatures. Its Acrobat Reader form guide explains the difference between interactive and flat forms.
WPS Office
WPS Office is useful if you already use it on Windows or your phone. On a computer, open the PDF, choose Fill & Sign, enter your answers, then use Save As. On mobile, its markup tools let you place text on the document and share the completed file.

How to fill out a PDF form on your phone
On iOS 26 or later, open the PDF in Preview. Tap the form-filling control, select a field, and type. Preview also lets you add a text box or signature when the file has no usable field.
On an older iPhone, open the document in Files or Mail. Use AutoFill for supported fields or Markup to add text and a signature.
On Android, open the PDF in Google Drive and look for Edit, then Form Filling. If that option does not appear, Google Drive cannot fill that file. Try WPS Office or Adobe Acrobat Reader instead. Google documents the supported flow in its Android PDF form instructions.
A desktop or laptop is still safer for long forms. You can see more of the page and are less likely to miss a field.
Before you send the completed PDF
Check the saved file, not only the open browser tab.
- Reopen the downloaded copy and confirm that every answer is visible.
- Make sure checkboxes and dropdown choices stayed selected.
- Check that your signature is on the correct line.
- Keep the blank original and a copy of the completed form.
- Follow the sender's instructions for email, upload, or submission.
